Airtel Trace Music Star to be Mentored by Superstar Akon

added on March 08, Sunday

Hired by Airtel Trace Music Star to sit on the judge panel alongside Afro pop songstress Vanessa Mdee and record producer Hermy B, Joett and his musical fraternity pals were charged with the arduous task of sifting through audition tapes and later, after selecting the top 5 entries, Joett was commissioned to vocal coach the contestants for the Tanzania Finale that took place February 7th 2015. Quite a tall order, considering Joett only had 10 hours per contestant to get their vocals in order in time for the finish line, in which Mayunga emerged overall winner.

Winners from thirteen African countries will attend a televised Pan-African Grand Finale in Nairobi on March 28th, to elect the Airtel TRACE Music Star 2015. The winning finalist will travel to the USA to be mentored by megastar Akon and he/she will star in their own professional music video to premier on TRACE. The Airtel TRACE Music Star winner will also sign a record deal with Universal Music in the USA. In the run-up to the Pan-African Grand Finale, Tanzanian winner, Mayunga, continues to receive professional vocal training and mentoring from Joett.

My Bio

JOETT, an occasional jazz performer in the 00s, is a renowned 90s dance act from Tanzania, who's critically acclaimed 2010 comeback pop single I Could Never Live (Without Your Love) reignited his pop recording career and gained him membership to the American Society Of Composers, Authors And Publishers (ASCAP). His follow-up 2012 disco single "Color Me Beautiful" was selected via Song Submit to be considered directly by #1 Hit Songwriter and A&R scout Mick Walsh, who has worked with Simon Cowell, Paul McCartney, Boy George, Florence And The Machine, and Dizzee Rascal; and introduced him as a promising international songwriter for the US market, to come out of Africa. Major label hit production teams are interested in Joett’s work… like Universal, Sony BMG, Capitol, Columbia and Jive Records.

Joett, whose works are registered with ASCAP, works exclusively with record producers in the UK and the USA to create his music. By introduction through Music Clout, he has now signed an exclusive publishing deal with AudioSparx USA... one of the world's top publishing brands that license The Music That Powers Hollywood.

Staying with Music Clout, yet another pivotal introduction has lead to Joett's acoustic track "Got U On My Mind" being beautifully reviewed on, about which they write... "Sung with the utmost of passion, Joett’s 'Got U On My Mind' is a tender beautiful love ballad. By keeping the sound to the absolute essentials the song has an intimate, welcoming nature to it. The guitar work in particular is rather lovely as the nimble strumming and finger-picking works wonders in giving the entirety of the piece a crisp refreshing feeling. Lyrically the song has a highly articulate, poetic quality to it as it manages to tie together a wide variety of hopes and dreams with a sense of devotion. Easily the highlight of the song are the expressive, emotive vocals which serve as the heart of the piece."

On October 13th 2014, Joett released a banging nu disco track I'm Gonna Live Forever featuring Tanzanian rapper G Fullah who, sadly, passed away eight days before the release of the single (his debut); and Tanzanian boyband Level One. Sprinkled with uplifting embellishments reminiscent of the Boogie era, the track follows in the footsteps of Joett's debut club hit Afro Lover released on Dubai label MusicBox International via licensing to London dance label STIP Records in 1996. Joett is looking to license his songs to record labels in Europe and North America for use by other artists; as well as to secure placement for inclusion in dance compilation albums around the world.

A former host of 70s Disco 80s Pop radio show Boogie, on Dar es salaam’s Times 100.5 FM from October 23rd 2011, to February 3rd 2013, Joett is also a celebrated vocal coach, Business Times Newspaper columnist (Letters from a Vocal Coach), and artist development professional in his native country, Tanzania. His most recent accolade springs from vocal coaching and mentoring protégé Mayunga Nalimi, who went on to win the Pan African Airtel Trace Music Star 2015 singing competition for Tanzania, beating contestants from 12 other African countries in a televised Kenya grand finale that was filled with drama and intrigue, and where mega star Akon was among the judges. Mayunga's win earned him a recording contract with major label Universal Music... and later, with TRACE; and the opportunity to be mentored by Akon in Los Angeles, with whom he went on to record the song and video Please Don't Go Away. Meanwhile, Joett, who continues to train Mayunga, is also the official agent to Mayunga and works closely with the record label and entertainment associates for the advancement of Mayunga's career.

Joett's most recent songwriting milestones "Got U On My Mind" and “Twisted Over U Babe”, with Joett on vocal and Elisha Sukari on acoustic guitar, are the new addition to Joett Music Publishing/ASCAP, USA song catalog. These acoustic tracks were recorded in Dar es salaam, and mixed & mastered by King Penn (KP) at Trackwriterz Studio in Atlanta, USA. KP works with Madonna's label Maverick, and has also mixed for Beyonce and 50 Cent. The pop versions of Got U On My Mind and Twisted Over U Babe, performed by American singer Ty Ward, were produced by Ryan Matthews for Coded Sounds in Los Angeles, and are currently being pitched to major and independent record label A&R for album placement. The songwriter-producer duo also undertakes commissioned songwriting projects for artists and record labels in the United States & Europe.

Meanwhile, Joett's 70s disco track Color Me Beautiful from 2012 has been reworked to an ambient acoustic setting. Beautifully recorded with Joett on vocal and Elisha Sukari on acoustic guitar; and mastered by Sarthak Tale at Wanene, a state-of-the-art recording studio in Dar es salaam, Tanzania, this refreshing acoustic version breathes new life into the one song that has opened many a door State side for Joett.

Joett was the official vocal coach and judge for Airtel Trace Music Star Tanzania Season 1 & 2, and has also sat on the judge panels of TIKISA Let’s Dance on Tanzania’s ITV, Miss Universe Tanzania, Kilimanjaro Music Awards and most recently the EATV Music Awards. In July 2017, Joett was appointed Juror and member of the Academy of Voters representing Eastern Africa, at the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA).

In November 2017, Joett published his memoirs '101 Letters from a Vocal Coach', which chronicle his vocational challenges as a vocal coach and offer helpful tips and articles for singers. This fascinating book, which began life as a column in Tanzania’s Business Times Newspaper and quickly grew into a must-have resource for information for singers, is available in paperback from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Lulu.
